Wow!!! We have a lot of catching up to do! Last time I wrote, Faith was getting ready to leave the hospital but had to have Laser Eye Surgery for her ROP (Retinopathy of Prematurity) and Plus Disease that was in her eyes. The way the doctor explained it was the Optic Nerve comes into the back of the eye somewhere in the center. Blood Vessels then grow out from the Optic Nerve toward the outside of the eye. If you picture a bullseye on the back of the eye, Faith’s Blood Vessels grew really well through the first and second rings. When they reached the third ring, they started to grow sideways and even back toward the Optic Nerve. The big scare in all of this is that if any of those blood vessels ever reach the Optic Nerve or cross each other and break, it can cause permanent blindness. We had a check up four days earlier and the Dr. told us it was looking better and she wouldn’t have to have surgery. Then all of the sudden at a routine eye exam on the day we are checking out of the hospital they tell us about this. We had the exam on Wednesday and we had the Laser Eye Surgery on Friday. Faith went in at 6:30 am on Friday and came out about 8:45 am. The Dr. met with us after surgery and he felt really good about it!
They had to completely put Faith out in order to do the surgery. They re-intubated her and put her back on a ventilator. This was a little scary seeing her back on all these machines. She was completely out of it until about 1:30 pm on Friday. She started to wake up and move around a little bit, so they decided to extubate her and put her back on the nasal cannula for her oxygen. They tested her by turning off the oxygen and seeing what she would do before pulling the tubes out of her throat and risk having to put them back in. Fortunately they tested her because she needed it. Her oxygen saturations dropped and her heart rate dove to 23. They hooked her back up and we waited. About 5:00 pm they decided she was ready to breathe on her own, so they went ahead and extubated her. She did really well for about 30 minutes and then the trouble began. Faith quit breathing, turned white as a ghost and her lips turned black. Her oxygen saturations dropped completely and her pulse down to 18-23. They bagged her immediately and got her back up again. Over the next 6 hours Katie and I would hold Faith and watch and feel her every breath. While in my arms she repeated this spell 4 more times. Each time the nurses would bag her and bring her back up. This was one of the scariest times in my life. To hold my little girl and see her like that broke my heart. Finally, the Dr. came in and ordered a dose of Caffeine and a dose of Narc-an (a drug they give to people who overdose) and within 20 minutes she was starting to become her precious little self again.
Sunday finally rolled around and we celebrated Easter with Faith. We dressed her up and took her pictures and held her all day long. This was a special day for me because it was both Easter and my Birthday. Both of these were great things for us to celebrate, but the best thing by far was a Birthday present from Annette (Faith’s NICU doctor). Faith was doing really well on Sunday morning and was down to a very little amount of oxygen. I asked Annette if she would do me a favor and write and order to try Faith on NO OXYGEN and she did! I have to say I was very nervous, but also quite excited. The nurse came in right away and removed the nasal cannula from her nose and she started to breathe completely on her own. It gets better. As soon as they took the oxygen away, her oxygen saturations in her body went from 85-90 to 99-100!!! This was the best day yet! I held her all day and praised the Lord for taking her off of oxygen! The lungs we were told would never be there, then would never be big enough, then would never be able to sustain her, are absorbing all the oxygen her little body needs and more!!!! Thank you Lord!!!
We had to wait in the hospital until the next Thursday for a follow-up eye exam to see how the surgery went. Katie and I were praying hard for good results. The Dr. came in, looked at her eyes, put down his instruments and smiled! She looks great! I have never seen that fast of progress in one week, he said. We were not surprised! I know Faith has more people praying for her than any of us can imagine, and I know she has a special place in the Heart of God! He likes to spend a lot of time with her and it shows. The Eye Dr. gave us the thumbs up and Dr. Hanson gave us the thumbs up and told us to go home, so we packed our room and the car in one hour and were on our way HOME!!!!
We came home on April 12th, 2007 and are loving every minute of it! It has been a huge adjustment for all of us! Katie and I realized we can’t sleep anymore and Faith realizes it is her job to wake us up when we start dozing off. We have been to one Dr. appointment here in Gillette and one in Denver since we have been home and have received great news from both of them. Faith is now 6 lbs. 5 0z. and fat as can be. Our little sack of bones is turning into a chubby little girl!
I want to thank all of you so much for your prayers and support! I can’t begin to explain how blessed we are by all of you! We have truly experienced a miracle and it is because all of you took time out of your busy schedules and lifted up our little girl to the Lord! Thank you so very much! I wish there was a way for you to truly understand our gratitude for everything! So many of you have helped with meals, clothes, gifts, rides, phone calls and prayers that we can’t begin to say “Thank You!” We have truly been blessed by you and our lives are changed because of it! Thank you for being the hands and feet of the Lord in this lost and hurting world! May God richly bless you beyond your wildest dreams!!!
